Every KenKen starts the same way: a grid, a scatter of cages, and that quiet question of where on earth to begin. Beginners answer it by staring. Fast solvers answer it with a routine. The gap between a ten-minute grid and a four-minute grid is almost never raw arithmetic speed. It is knowing which move to make first, and which moves to never waste time on.
That is the whole premise of these seven KenKen tips. Each one is a small, repeatable habit, and stacked together they are the difference between grinding and gliding. None of them require you to be a human calculator. They just teach your eyes where to look. First, Sweep Up the Free Points
Before you attempt any real deduction, harvest everything the puzzle hands you for free. This opening sweep costs almost no thought, and it seeds the grid with the anchor digits every later step leans on. If you internalize only one KenKen strategy, make it this one.
1. Fill every single-cell cage on sight
A single-cell cage is a gift. The target is the answer, full stop, because there is nothing to combine it with. Drop those numbers in immediately, then treat each one as live intelligence: a 3 sitting in row two means no other cell in that row or column can be a 3. New to how the cages and operations behave? 2. Chase the forced numbers
A forced number is a digit that has only one legal home left. Once your single cells are down, scan each row and column for a value that can fit in exactly one remaining cell. 3. Memorize the small-cage combinations
Certain two-cell cages have exactly one answer, so learn them cold. In a 4x4 puzzle, a few show up constantly:
- A 7+ cage can only be 3 and 4.
- A 12x cage can only be 3 and 4.
- A 3+ cage can only be 1 and 2.
- A 3 division cage can only be 1 and 3.
Subtraction and division cages are especially friendly because their candidate lists are short. The moment you read the target, you should already know the pair without adding anything up.
4. Attack the edges and corners
Edges and corners sit at the crossing of fewer options, but the real payoff is the line-sum trick. Every row and every column holds the numbers 1 through N exactly once, so each one adds up to the same fixed total. In a 4x4 that total is 10; in a 6x6 it is 21. If you know every cell in a row but one, the missing digit is simply the total minus what is already there. Corners, where a known row and a known column meet, are prime spots to deploy it.
Fast solvers are not calculating faster. They are recognizing patterns they have seen a hundred times, so the arithmetic barely happens at all.
Make Your Candidates Do the Work
Once the easy points are gone, the puzzle becomes a bookkeeping problem. Strong solvers do not try to hold ten possibilities in their head at once. They write them down and let the paper do the thinking.
5. Pencil in candidates, not guesses
In every unresolved cell, jot the digits that are still legal there, small, tucked into a corner. These pencil marks are the backbone of any serious KenKen strategy. As you lock in confirmed numbers, erase the candidates they rule out elsewhere. Guessing forces you to backtrack when it collapses; candidates only ever narrow. On tougher, higher-difficulty grids this habit is not optional, it is the only sane way through.
6. Eliminate, then eliminate again
Elimination is the engine underneath everything else. After each placement, walk that number down its row and across its column, striking it from every candidate list it touches. Then watch for the hidden single: a digit that survives in only one cell of a line, even if that cell still shows other candidates. It is easy to miss because the cell looks busy. One clean elimination pass often unlocks three or four more placements in a row.
The Move Nobody Wants to Make
You are almost done. Every cell is full and you want to slam the pencil down and call it. One habit separates solvers who finish clean from solvers who quietly finish twice.
7. Recheck every cage before you finish
A KenKen is only solved when every row, every column, and every cage checks out. Run your eyes cage by cage and confirm the digits actually reach the target with the listed operation. This costs about fifteen seconds and saves the far worse cost of discovering at cell forty that something upstream went wrong. Verifying is not slow. Re-solving is slow.
Speed in KenKen is really just fluency, and fluency comes from reps. There is a nice bonus, too.
