What KenKen and Sudoku Have in Common

The Real Difference Between KenKen and Sudoku
Here is where the two split. In a standard Sudoku, the grid is always 9x9, carved into nine 3x3 boxes, and each box must also hold 1 through 9. That box constraint is the entire game. There is no arithmetic anywhere. You never add a single number. You only place it.
KenKen throws out the boxes and brings in cages. A cage is a bold-outlined group of cells with a small label in one corner, something like 12x or 3-. That label is a target and an operation. The digits inside the cage have to combine, using that operation, to hit the target. A cage marked 12x might hold a 3 and a 4, or a 2 and a 6. A single-cell cage just hands you its number for free.
One rule that trips people up
In KenKen a number can repeat inside a cage, as long as it does not break the row or column rule. A long L-shaped cage adding up to 15 could happily use two 4s, provided they sit in different rows and columns. Is KenKen Harder Than Sudoku?

But KenKen also flexes to your level in a way classic Sudoku never does.

Either way, your brain is getting a decent workout, and there is real research behind that. A large UK study called PROTECT tracked roughly 19,000 adults aged 50 and over and found that people who did number and word puzzles more often tended to score better across attention, reasoning, and memory.
People who engaged in puzzles more frequently had brain function, on some reasoning and memory measures, equivalent to being around ten years younger than their age.
Honest caveat: that is a correlation, not proof, and no puzzle can promise to hold off dementia. Still, the direction is encouraging. A separate Duke University trial even found crossword puzzles beat some computer brain-games at slowing memory decline in at-risk adults. And there is a smaller, more immediate payoff too: that jolt of satisfaction when a stubborn cage finally cracks is a genuine reward response, the same "aha" effect psychologists have tied to a little hit of dopamine.
